Solo Soprano Saxophone, Solo Alto Saxophone
Strings (Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Bass)
This concerto was orginally written for Andrew Sutton and Andrew Franks who gave the first performance in the UK with the Sussex Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mark Andrew James, in Hove Town Hall on 25th June 1994.
It was first published by Comus Edition, but in the Summer of 2026 it was assigned to Goodmusic Publishing, affording me the opportunity to improve on a few sections I felt could benefit from my more experienced years as a composer. So, some thiry-two years later I have now revised it for the American saxophonists, husband and wife duo, Valentin Kovalev and Aiwen Zhang Kovalev, who had already performed the 1994 version with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Taichi Fukumura in February 2026.
The original orchestration ommitted clarinets as the soloists also played clarinet in the orchestra, so I have rescored it for a larger orchestra, adding in the clarinets, plus trombones, percussion, harp and timpani, and I've also re-instated much of the original cadenza from the 3rd movement that was partly improvised at the time, but wasn't included in the original published version. This concerto has been with me most of my composing life through the recording on Claudio Records made in 1998 with the original performers, but I'm very happy to have now revistied the piece for Valentin and Aiwen, and hopefully have also given it a new lease of life. Paul Carr
