In Blue Skies the solo flute soars like a bird above rhythmic, subtly changing harmonies from the string ensemble, and the solo violin emerges from time to time to interact with and imitate the flute.
In the sunny opening section the flute has a cadenza partway through before the opening theme returns in a new key. The Andante passage in E minor is more pensive - perhaps clouds are gathering? Sunshine quickly returns though, as the music moves to E major and the pace quickens. After a contrasting section in 9/8 time the music segues back to the opening material and soars to a joyful conclusion.
