Orchestration: 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon, 2 Horns in F
Strings (Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Bass)
These two pieces were originally composed in 1966 for Trevor Morgan and his Southampton Concert Orchestra who gave the first performance, and revised in 2013 for Cornwall Chamber Orchestra.
The first is called Shawford, being the charming village near Winchester where I rented a flat for some years overlooking the River Itchen. During the winter months, when the trees were bare, the view from my window extended to the neighbouring village of Twyford and the small church there. My memory is not clear as to to whether the bells rang there, but I have incorporated a two-note peal into the middle section of the piece as I think I used to hear it when the wind blew in our direction. The piece is otherwise gentle and pastoral and revolves around the opening melody played by the clarinet.
The second piece Buckler’s Hard, is a quick march by contrast, with a strong nautical flavour incorporating the sea shanty Johnny come down to Hilo. Buckler’s Hard is very near Beaulieu in the New Forest from where you can walk alongside the Beaulieu River. Originally intended as a rival port to Southampton it was to be called Montagu Town after John Montagu; the name passed down to the present Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, and the nearby Montagu Arms. The first naval vessel was built at nearby Bailey’s Hard (no relation) but Buckler’s Hard was an important shipbuilding port in itself. Its wide sloping street and tiled cottages on each side have remained, and the slipway for large ships is still clearly apparent. Now, from its jetty one can enjoy a river trip and a meal at the Master Builder Hotel. Initially I scored the two pieces for the full orchestra where I was to become conductor in 1969 for the following 32 years. On my return to Cornwall in 2001 I was invited to conduct the Cornwall Chamber Orchestra for whom the piece has been re-written and appropriately orchestrated. Judith Bailey
