It has been a great privilege to compose a piece for the 60th Anniversary of Southampton Concert Orchestra whose first concert I attended before my long association as its conductor. Being Cornish and living on the Atlantic coast, this short tone-poem aims to suggest through orchestral colour the varying patterns of the sea. A brief brass introduction leading to a broad theme in the strings remains a focal point throughout. A quiet slow middle section suggests a calm sea with sounds of a distant buoy and lighthouse shown on a bell and muted horn note. After a resurgence of the original material the music ebbs away into the unknown. The title is chosen from the earliest mention of the Atlantic dating from c.450 BC when it was referred to as The Sea of Atlas.
