GENTLE FALLS THE RAIN started life as an unaccompanied choral piece to words by Euan Tait, but sometimes I like to arrange my own music for other instruments, as is the case with this simple, but passionate song; this version is dedicated to Richard Robbins who often uses a small string ensemble to accompany various choral concerts of the many choirs he conducts. Having recently included my Air for Strings in a concert, Richard asked if I had anything else in a similar vein, so taking my original choral setting of Rain as a starting point, I have fashioned an extended version as an elegy for string orchestra.
