This is the forty-fourth to be written in a cycle of musical portraits of the forty-eight wild orchids of Great Britain and Ireland. The third movement, Lapland Sleighride, is also published separately as Christmas in Lapland (GMCO155).
In Great Britain, the Lapp Orchid is found only in western Scotland. Abroad, it grows in Scandinavia, northern Russia and as far south as the Alps and Dolomites.
The Sinfonietta of the Lapp Orchid is in three short movements and chronicles the yearly story of the growth and dying back of the orchid. The first movement, Prelude: Spring in Lapland, is an evocation of the melting snow and subsequent green shoots of early spring appearing in that part of north-western Finland known as Lapland. The second movement, Glen Borrowdale, one of the orchid's sites in Scotland, begins with an evocation of the pastoral beauty of the glen. The rapidly shifting harmonies correspond with the green, violet and red colours of the orchid in a colour-coded scheme of harmonies used throughout the orchid portraits. A tinge of sadness pervades the closing stages as the orchid sets seed and dies back in preparation for the winter, where its sites are likely to be covered with snow - which gives us an excuse to have a sleigh-ride back in Lapland for the third movement!
We journey through the Lapland countryside on Christmas Day with breathtaking winter views over pine forests. We round a bend to reveal ermine and reindeer gambolling in the snow. We come to a church, bells pealing and a brass band. The Lapp folk are outside, celebrating Christmas. Then the majesty of the Northern Lights - flurries of snow - and as the sleigh-ride nears its end, we think back over the journey through the magnificent Lapland winter landscape. Peter Lawson
