Many of the variations refer in one way or another to other composers, among them Rossini, Arthur Benjamin, Mahler, Nielsen, Richard Strauss, Brahms, Bartok and Stravinsky. A recording of this suite is available on a Marco Polo CD of works by David Lyon, played by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted by David Lloyd-Jones.
