This is the overture to Franz von Suppe’s operetta Light Cavalry premiered in Vienna in 1866. Although the whole operetta is rarely performed or recorded, the overture is one of Suppe's most popular compositions, and has achieved a life of its own, divorced from the opera of which it originally formed a part.
This edition keeps to the original scoring but gives Horns in F (originally in E), Trumpets in Bb (also originally in E) and provides Clarinet parts in Bb as an alternative to the originals in A - though this does lead to some tricky keys and A Clarinets would be preferred.
