Voices of Spring (Fruhlingsstimmen) originally had an optional vocal part, sung at the first performance in 1882 by the famous soprano known as Bianca Bianchi. It is dedicated to the pianist and composer Alfred Grünfeld, who made a piano arrangement of it. The vocal version is sometimes inserted into Act 2 of the composer’s operetta Die Fledermaus. This orchestral version is now a much loved piece of standard repertoire and is characterised by its memorable melodies, which can at one moment be full of energy and give way suddenly to grace and charm.
This edition changes the Trumpets in F to the modern B flat, adds hundreds of articulation marks and extra dynamics, tempi instructions and inserts rehearsal marks. The original version contained many inconsitencies, a missed-out start of a repeat sign and even some glaring errors in the numbering of bars, which must have caused some interesting moments in rehearsals!
