The Annen Polka was written for performance in one of the bandstands in the large municipal park known as the Prater, Vienna, on July 26th, 1852, when the 26-year old composer was still making his name in the musical world. In Vienna, July 26th is an important day of feasting and musical entertainment, celebrating St Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary. It was probably only performed with a group of musicians, but its lovely melodies captured the hearts of the Viennese public and it was soon in demand in dances and concerts in Austria.
This version is for full orchestra and I have added a second Trombone, a Bass Trombone and Tuba to fit the orchestral requirements, plus Clarinets in A (with alternative parts for Bb clarinets) instead of the somewhat dated Clarinets in C, transposing some of the highest phrases down an octave where they would be rather too high for comfort. I have also converted the trumpets in low F to standard modern-day ones in Bb and put in a good deal of extra articulation marks and dynamics. Peter Lawson
