Johann Georg Leopold Mozart (1719-1787) was a German composer, conductor, teacher, and violinist. He is best known today as the father and teacher of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and for his violin textbook Versuch einer grundlichen Violinschule. The Schlittenfahrt or "Sleigh Ride" is a movement from his Divertimento in F for orchestra.
This is a charming arrangement for small orchestra, with parts for two sleigh bells positioned either side of the orchestra. This is classic festive fare - a perfect orchestral item for any Christmas concert.
A commercial recording by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Barry Wordsworth is available on a Naxos recording entitled "The Night Before Christmas" (Naxos 8.570331).
