During the summer of 1680, the 21 year old Henry Purcell wrote a number of fantasias for viols in 3, 4 and 5 parts. This "Fantazia Upon One Note" is one of those. It is not known why Purcell wrote these fantasias or why he chose to write one based around only one note, though it has been suggested that it could have been to enable a beginner viol player to join in - and probably get rather bored! In this arrangement the "one note" is passed to various instruments and no one player needs to be bored!
