The Concertino uses three of John Field’s most popular piano pieces to give the instrument something distinctly 19th century to play, that period being particularly short on such fare for all the woodwind instruments. The outer movements are both rondos - the first, Le Midi, features chiming effects towards the end while the final scherzo is the last movement of his Sonata Op.1 dedicated to his teacher and mentor Muzio Clementi. The central Nocturne is one of many he wrote in the 1810s while in St.Petersburg. Although not new as a title, Field’s interpretation of it in high romantic terms certainly paved the way later for Chopin’s “Night Pieces”.
