SONGS OF THE SUSSEX COAST for clarinet or violin and cello
Goodmusic GM551
Four short fantasies for clarinet (or violin) and cello on traditional songs from the archives of the Copper Family of Rottingdean, Sussex, whose lusty singing has kept them alive from generation to generation.
1. The Fisherman who turned out to be a Lord, disguised for to woo a fair maid.
2. The Forsaken Mermaid whose lover was drowned at sea and who dashed herself on the rocks from grief.
3. Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy whose sailor love went off round the ocean in search of something new.
4. Admiral Benbow who sailed to fight the French but lost his legs in action and was (so the song says) buried in Selmeston Church, Sussex. (Not true.) After a solemn funeral cortege the piece ends with a celebratory hornpipe in his memory.
The work was commissioned by clarinettist Victoria Samek for herself and cellist Sebastian Comberti as we all live near one another on the Sussex coast; the version for violin and cello for Kate and Sebastian Comberti. Paul Lewis
"It's beautiful, gorgeous, fun, quirky, and your skilled writing between the instruments makes the duo a joy to play." Victoria Samek
Duration 8 minutes
Score and all parts included.
