I first encountered Ben Loska when I saw a YouTube clip of him playing the première of a new Trombone Sonata by my good friend Peter Copley. Ben was mightily impressive and as I’d long thought of writing a Trombone Concerto I set about writing one for him. I love the powerful big-boned sound of the trombone, as we all do, but also its surprising agility and ability for playing more quietly sustained passages - perfect for a concerto. Having completed the work a few months later, I went to meet with Ben at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London where he was in his final year, and he played through the piece, but also offered up various alternatives to what the trombone can achieve if you ignore the standard text books, and he helped in re-arranging some of the trickier passages which proved a revelation, and which I then incorporated into the concerto. The work is in three movements, with the first two linked together, followed by a punchy finale. Paul Carr
