Piano duet (4 hands on 1 piano) edited by Peter Lawson.
Hamish MacCunn (1868-1916) attracted a good deal of attention as a nineteen-year-old with his Overture The Land of the Mountain and the Flood. He had won a scholarship at the age of fifteen to the newly established Royal College of Music and he was better known in his short adulthood as a conductor and a teacher at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music, although he continued to compose when time allowed.
These three charming reminiscences of his childhood in Scotland were written in 1897 in versions for solo piano, violin and piano and this piano duet version, originally published by Augener Edition. In the original publication, the Secondo player playing the left-hand-side page and the Primo the right-hand-side page. This was a common format in the nineteenth century, but it makes rehearsal easier with the two players playing with the Secondo appearing underneath the Primo, as in this edition. I have added fingering, tidied up some slightly contradictory instructions in the original and deleted a good deal of unnecessary accidentals.
The three movements are By the Burnside - with its glorious, pentatonic melody and almost Wagnerian middle section, On the Loch, a gently lapping evocation of a trip, presumably in a rowing boat - and, finally, an excitingly rumbustious Harvest Dance.
Duration 9½ minutes
