Denys Hood
THE PERFECT MALE VOICE CHOIR
Goodmusic GM500
A humorous piece for male voice choir (TTBB) and piano with words and music by Denys Hood.
Hark, what a tuneful sound we hear in the air!
Yes, how pleasing on the ear;
Voices combining in such sweet harmony,
What are these wondrous chords we hear?
Basses, resounding in rich deep rolling tones,
Baritones rich and mellow too.
Tenors, with music to inspire;
Come along and listen to the sound of a male voice choir.
We are the second bass, the deep throated men.
We sing as low as we can aim.
We are the baritones, who always are in tune,
Modesty is our middle name.
Top tenors always sing in sweet, dulcet tones:
We reach notes the basses can't!
We are the second tenors and we're left with the notes which the others don't want!
We have a comprehensive repertoire,
We sing ev'ry mood and style.
We can be valiant fellows, upright and true,
Brave and thoroughly worthwhile.
But then, at other times, we're not quite so pure,
Bandits, vagabonds and worse.
More about the characters we sometimes portray,
We'll reveal in the very next verse.
Soldiers, soldiers, marching on parade,
Keeping time with the band.
Splendid in our uniform displayed,
The smartest in the land.
We are sailor men, sailing on the briny sea,
Climbing up the rigging, scrubbing down the deck, such busy tars are we,
Fighting the pirates, searching for gold, trying to tame the stormy main.
When we reach the harbour safely, then we'll be such jolly sailor men.
If, at night, you chance to walk the street,
You'd do best to stay at home.
Footpads, robbers, highwaymen or thieves,
In these guises we do roam.
All the words of ev'ry song,
We remember (right or wrong).
If, perchance, they just won't come, then, instead of words, we hummm.
This was the tuneful sound you heard in the air:
Was it pleasing on the ear?
Our voices combining in such sweet harmony.
Some wondrous sounds for you to cheer.
Second bass, deep and full and round,
Baritones, mellow in sound,
Second tenors, true to the pitch,
Top tenors, full in tone and rich.
You've listened to the sound of a perfect (well, nearly perfect) a perfect male voice choir.
