In November 1888 the 14 year-old Holst's attention was caught by the announcement of a composing competition in the Boy's Own Paper (of which he was an avid reader), offering prizes of two guineas and one guinea. He entered the competition and came sixth out of twenty-nine entries in the Junior division. Holst continued to enter the competition in the next few years, going on to win first prize. The New Year Chorus of 1892 was one of his winning entries.
