A cantata for young voices with narrators and orchestra (or piano) with improvised scrapyard percussion. Music by Robin Grant, Words by Neil Beddow.
John Wilkinson (1728 - 1808) - Born in Cumberland, John Wilkinson moved to South Staffordshire in about 1766 to set up his iron works, thus beginning the Industrial Revolution in the area now known as the Black Country. After marrying his wealthy second wife he acquired the Manor of Bradley and built his Mother Furnace near the Fiery Holes. Many stories were told about the man during and long after his lifetime, making him the local celebrity of industry. He is famed for his inspired use of iron; the maker of the first iron bridge, the first iron boat, iron buildings, an iron church with an iron pulpit, iron copybooks and iron pens for Bradley School . . . . and the first iron coffins. This earned him the nickname "Iron Mad" Wilkinson.
