Michael Blake
LEAF CARRYING SONG for violin and harp
Bardic Edition BDE1459
for violin (or flute or oboe) and harp.
Leaf Carrying Song for oboe d’amore and guitar was written between 1991 and 1993 for Simon Wynberg. It was revised in 2002, but only premiered on 2 November 2008 in the ZK Matthews Hall, Pretoria by Kobus Malan (oboe) and Michal George (guitar). Pieces called Leaf Carrying Song - sung while carrying large leaves for building shelters - can be found in the repertoires of the pygmy communities in Central Africa.
In 2011 Yasutaka Hemmi and Takayo Matsumara asked me to arrange the piece for their duo X[iksa] and they first performed it on 1 February 2012 at the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival in South Africa.
The violin part may also be played on the flute or oboe. A version for solo wind instrument and keyboard (harpsichord or fortepiano) is published separately. Michael Blake, May 2023.
Duration 8½ minutes
