Margaret Lyell
SONATA IN ONE MOVEMENT for violin and piano
Bardic Edition BDE1448
My mother Margaret Lyell (1910-2000) was a Scottish composer and pianist. She wrote her single-movement violin sonata in 1930 while studying at the Royal Academy of Music under Julius Harrison, a year after her piano concerto "Schiehallion". The first performance in modern times was given at her memorial concert at the British Music Information Centre in 2001 by myself and Elisabeth Perry, to whom I am very grateful for editorial suggestions for the violin part. Other editorial additions are my own, however the text is entirely as the composer left it. Julian Jacobson
