Michael Blake
FIVE EAST CAPE LANDSCAPES for cello and piano
Bardic Edition BDE1447
1. Wild Coast at Lusikisiki; 2. Tsitsikamma Forest; 3. Ngqoko Village, Lady Frere; 4. Alice Train; 5. The Great Karoo
Composer’s Note
I lived in the East Cape from 1998 - 2002 and got to know these landscapes like the back of my hand. After I moved away, I returned often and still continue to do so. It was a difficult choice to select just five of these landscapes, but these probably have the most poignant memories for me - in particular Lady Frere, with which I have the most indelible musical connections through the bow music and overtone singing of the women of Ngqoko Village. Apart from Cape Town, where I was born, the East Cape is for me one of the most beautiful and haunting landscapes in the world. Michael Blake
