The morning anthem (Agnus Dei) is a simple setting for a small church choir. The words for the evening introit/anthem are by St. Ambrose, Bishop of Milano from 374 to 397. He is the patron saint of beekeepers. Translation and versification are by the prolific and greatly loved John M. Neale (1818-66). The melody of the setting is based on an Irish traditional one.
