Brian Hughes(b.1938)
Brian Hughes was born in Rhosllannerchrugog, Wrexham in 1938. His vocal and choral music is very dramatic and is particularly accessible to the listener. He has experience of conducting ranging from children’s groups to large scale Male Voice and SATB choirs of over a hundred voices. He has worked with professional choirs such as Buxton Festival Opera Chorus, Cheltenham Festival Opera Chorus, Gothenburg Opera Chorus, and was Head of Opera Music Staff and Chorus Master at the Royal Northern College of Music for more than twenty-five years. He studied piano with Patrick Piggot at Cardiff University and has worked extensively with a great number of professional singers on vocal repertoire. His compositions are used by leading choirs in international competitions, but he also has a range of pieces that are more suitable for concert work and not too difficult for amateur choirs. He has served as a regular adjudicator at the National Eisteddfod and the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, and has held choral workshops in many parts of the country and on television.
