Orchestration: Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Bass
There have been, in recent years, two newcomers to the wild orchids of Britain and Ireland, namely the Small and Greater Tongue Orchids. However, few botanists would ever have expected the formerly Mediterranean species, Giant Orchid, Himantoglossum robertianum, to grow in the English climate, let alone in March, when frost and even late snow are not uncommon. But this has actually happened, on a steep bank in Oxfordshire, on privately-owned land near Didcot, in 2022, when a colony of 19 plants were discovered, 9 of which were in flower.
On the basis that the Giant Orchid could well be here to stay, I have therefore extended my addenda of musical portraits of the orchids of Great Britain and Ireland to include the new arrival. Hence The Giant Orchid, a piece for string orchestra in three short movements. Peter Lawson
A PACK includes a full score plus strings 4/4/3/4/2
Duration 7½ minutes
