Three-Piece Suite image
Though published here primarily for bassoon trio, Three-Piece Suite was composed for the London Serpent Trio who premiered the work at the Marlborough Arts Festival in June 1986. The obsolete serpent is a rare creature and serpent trios are even rarer, so subsequent performances have been on bassoon, for which it is a perfect fit.
Tucket: A Shakespearian term for a short processional fanfare.
Serenade to a French Girl: A slow waltz marked con amore. The French girl in question was the one I was married to at the time.
Folk Dance: No cosy dance on an English village green but a strenuous romp with Slavic overtones. My maternal grandfather, whom I never met, was Russian, and I sometimes hear his voice speaking to me through my music.
