BAILEY, Judith (1941- )
Judith Bailey was born in Cornwall and studied at the Royal Acad-
emy of Music in London, specialising in clarinet, piano,
conducting and composition. Since 1971 she has worked free-
lance, conducting the Petersfield Orchestra and Southampton
S Concert Orchestra for around thirty years, and producing a sub-
stantial amount of music which is widely performed and published.
In 2001 she returned to live and work in her native Cornwall
where she is conductor of the Penzance Orchestral Society and
Cornwall Chamber Orchestra, and in the same year was awarded
the honour of an ARAM from the Royal Academy of Music. In 2005 she was made a
Bard of the Cornish Gorseth for services to music in Cornwall.

This work was written for Jean Waller, principal ‘cellist of the
Southampton Orchestra and commissioned for her birthday on
July 18th 1996 by her husband Patrick. As the composer’s
birthday falls on the same date, Judith Bailey took the Chinese
proverb “Keep a green bough in your heart and the singing bird
will come” as a source of inspiration for the piece, using the
element of “water” (appertaining to Cancer, the Crab) for her
first theme in the solo woodwind, and “ruby”, the Cancerian birthstone, as the sharp-edged
second theme for the solo brass.
The soloists in the “concerto” (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, trumpet, trombone and ‘cello)
are drawn from the orchestra with the part for ‘cello solo, written for Jean to play, linking
the various sections of the work. These players could be seated together at the front of the
orchestra in soloist fashion.

of all three places without making the music either too difficult to play or too abstruse
