It seems that Elgar wrote this short, peaceful elegy as a personal tribute to his friend August Jaeger of the music publishers Novello, ("Nimrod" of the Enigma Variations) who died in 1909 at the age of 49, after a long illness. This edition is as Elgar composed it, save for some minor editorial tidying-up.
