The piano part is in places just a piano-conductor score, with the result that the music would be more or less complete on strings and piano. However this would not be effective enough for a performance, though it might prove useful at sectional rehearsals. The minimum number of instruments envisaged is: strings, flute 1, clarinet 1 & 2, clarinet 3 or bassoon, trumpets 1 & 2 and timpani (1 player, 2 drums). The clarinet 3 part partly covers the lack of bassoon, and similarly violin 3 for viola, although this can be used as an elementary part even if the violas are strong. Trumpet 3 is not essential and stays low throughout.
