Following the publication of Thomas Hardy's play "The Famous Tragedy of the Queen of Cornwall", Rutland Boughton wrote to Hardy to propose an opera based on the play. Hardy was delighted and the music-drama was first performed at the Glastonbury Festival in August 1924.

This Overture was written at a later date and was given a London Premiere at a Promenade Concert at the Queen's Hall on 31st August 1926 played by the New Queen's Hall Orchestra with the composer conducting.
