Elgar had been appointed "Master of the King's Musick" in 1924 and the Nursery Suite, written in 1931, was prompted by the birth in August 1930 of Princess Margaret. The work is dedicated to "The Duchess of York and the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose". The work was recorded and performed in front of an invited audience on 4th June 1931 which included the Duke and Duchess of York, later to become King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and the four year old Princess Elizabeth. The work's public premiere took place in August 1931 at a Promenade Concert. It was well received and was later performed as a ballet at Sadler's Wells. There are seven sections: Aubade; The Serious Doll; Busy-ness; The Sad Doll; The Wagon (Passes); The Merry Doll; Dreaming - Envoy (Coda).

A PACK comprises an A4 sized full score plus a complete set of parts including strings 4/4/3/4/2.
Duration 19 minutes

"The Serious Doll" is also published separately in a version for soloist and orchestra - Goodmusic Concert Cameos No.24
